Second Great Escape to the Himalayas – Day 6

It was indeed a good morning. I was supposed to be not feeling well, that’s the impression created by the person who takes care of the tents where we stayed. He made sure I ate lots before we start for the day. Well before half past 8, we started up hill, the first target is to reach Pang.

The scene at Pang is, people having nice sleep, some trying to get better, and the rest started on a trek ! Great Times.

It was not tough, as was expected to go up hill to Pang. Flourishing designs of the nature in front of the eyes. The black bike kept on giving continuous troubles, it started getting used to us, especially to Vineesh. Every 15 min, he is sure to check the status and ‘health’ of the bike.

Within 90 minutes, we were at Pang, had a relax for an hour telling and listening what all happened. A mutual exchange of happenings. We started early than the scorpio, as usual, this time to make sure we stay ahead. From Pang, it is going to be superb. The awesomeness improves.

We are going to soon reach the Second Highest Pass of the World, Taglang-La through the 1000-lane roads of Moore Plains. I remember enjoying hearted-ly going through these plans last time, and I am sure it is going to be repeated. The roads got better, well the fun gets better too.

It took around three hours to cross the Moore plains successfully. We do not have many places to stop. We reached Taglang La.

We were unable to stay for long at Taglang La, which itself is at a awesome altitude of 16,676 ft, with gaining altitude in a much shorter distance.

We moved on, the climate becoming very very cold. The full day was awesome right from the morning. While going down, we found some snow. Finally. We enjoyed for a long time (so were the scorpions, by the time they reached).

I know its going to be easy from then on. Within no time we reached Rumtse, where we have some good food. The nature suddenly became colorful from the gray shades of the rocky mountains. Its all green, maroon and lot other colors. Leh is on the anvil. May be around 90 minutes away. We waited at Rumtse to catch up with the scorpio. We all had a gathering. We moved on, on our bikes to reach Karu, where we stopped for minor bike repairs and checkups.

40 min away from Leh. We roared. It was dark by the time we reached Leh. It was more of a relaxed ride from Karu, enjoying the Ladakh valley, the distant Gompas, me trying to explain the places to the rest of us as much as I can, in between health checkups for bikes and many many pics.

Leh is conquered. One more time.

Though we reached Leh by around 8 itself, it took us another three hours, to search a place to stay. There are vacant homes and hotels, but to accommodate eleven people, it’s not going to be easy. After two and half hours of tough search and filtering by almost all of us in all directions of Leh, we found a guest house to stay, deep inside of Leh. Even here, we almost hijacked the full guest house with our majority numbers, though there were unexpected guests (foreigners ) not happy with our ‘shoutings’. We had good food at night as well, with Purnima helping with her cooking. With ‘common’ bath rooms, there was a sudden demand for them. Sleep comes next.

After seeing the bike ride, most of the scorpio riders wanted to have that experience too. The plan for next day is almost ready in the minds of all. Girls wanted to make sure they get the bike ride without a miss. It all ended by deciding to give rest to the four wheeler and take rented ‘big’ bikes in Leh. Fortunately, its so easy in Leh to get a bike. I wanted to make a short trip, from second half of the next day to Khardung La. All on bikes.

Second Great Escape to the Himalayas – Day 5

We started getting ready quite early and by almost 730 we are ready with luggage on top of the Scorpio and behind the bike. We are to reach Darcha within an hour of drive. It was awesome. Early morning sun with good mood all around, the good times are all back.

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

All of us enjoyed the mid-way water flows on the road as well as some ‘solo’ pics.

After some good time at Darcha, where we stayed for about an hour, we moved on soon to reach Deepak Tal Lake. The enthusiasm is beyond any limits as we see the freezing water getting some company.

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

We got to again wait after crossing Deepak Tal, for road clearance. Helped as much as we could :)

Next is the most beautiful Baralacha La, with the accompanying Suraj Tal Lake. The whole area is just perfect. Supposed to be covered with full snow but the season is already late. Didn’t expected that, still the scene is so awesome, its breathtaking.

After some perfect time enjoyed on that monstrous heights, we planned to move ahead, with the scorpions still behind us. But, things won’t go as we want. Not so easily. The moment I ignited the engine and moved a yard, I heard a shout from behind signaling to stop. The black bike is now going to have a black time. The chain got broken ! thanks to the repair work that happened last night, the chain got tight and a slight movement is good enough for it to break. Big Break. The concept of  ’deenemma jeevitham‘ revisited us within no time.

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

Not exactly like last time. We are now strong. Not discouraged anymore with the tough situations, we started right away looking at the problem, and its solutions.

Meanwhile, the scorpio got past us, only to stop after another 40 km as it has its own problems creeping. Tire got punctured.

The biggest side effect of these kind of breakdowns is that, the rest of the people who are not working on the solution would get the time of the world to enjoy the location. In our case its Mahesh doing all sorts of pics, and the gang for the scorpio.

But it was a great effort. I cannot believe it even now. Two guys, both IT-pros, can repair a bike break down ! Fascinating to see the toolmanship.

Thanks to Chandu, the prime expert and knowledge source, to design the repair. No other thoughts were made whether to leave it there or not. Even when the scorpio passed us, we didn’t stop them for help. That’s what I call spirit. The spirit of deenemma jevitham

Chandu and Vineesh tired sweat hard even in one of the coldest place of India, fixing the chain. We removed one of the locks, then joined the remaining locks making the chain short, and bringing the rear tire nearer to make up for the short chain. It worked !

Me and mahesh tried to help wherever we can (with least effort from me), but still it all came up ok finally. We moved on.

For the puncture, it was Naresh who gave the big hand along with the driver. Fantastic guys.

You can also see the other hard working hands , Vasu and Naresh (with Yuva joined as well) making some important efforts all through the journey.

Overall it was a four hour stop four us at 13000 ft. We started again to reach Sarchu. It was again fun time. The more we went near to Sarchu, the better it got. We had a very awesome photo session (all of us, at different times and little different places) with some bike stunts as well.

We reached Sarchu. By that time scorpio has left to reach Pang which is the destination planned for stay for the night. By around 830 PM, scorpio is in Pang with all of them directly going to bed. Naresh had some breathing and other problems, else things are fine. They are now awaiting us to reach.

We reached Sarch at around 5 PM, and it is tough to reach Pang before it gets dark. We now had to take a decision whether to stop there, whether to reach Pang or if there are any other alternatives. We are unable to reach to any conclusions. Soon we found that some other bikers are starting then itself, to reach Pang. Instantly, I drove behind them , and getting past them. We reached a place 30 Km away from Pang by 730 PM, from where its up hill to Pang. We decided not to go anymore (though the other bikers continued!) as we found a place to stay. I would say, its a good decision in the end. Reaching a place is secondary, had we made it to Pang that night, we would have missed some fantastic beauties on the way, the next morning.

Some of the pics below shows the enjoyment, as expected for the day.

Second Great Escape to the Himalayas – Day 4

All I remember is that we are under a tent. The next thing was a small voice from outside the tent taking my name, and inquiring if we are inside !

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

That was our position. Instantly, we became a tourist spot for the scorpions who started early in the morning from the cleared traffic and soon reached the place where we are ‘hiding’.

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

They, now as usual, had covered some good scenes, early in the morning, though some of us are busy with ‘make-up’ and ‘filling their hungry stomach’ (and the reverse process as well :P ). All mountains are yours

Mahesh, getting ecstasic with some new found tool :

The scorpions soon after left to reach Keylong , and were there by Lunch. Good timing followed. We (me and chandu) decided to continue our journey of sleep (without even showing the face to all those who came to ‘visit’), and started at 2 PM to reach Keylong at around 7 PM. All is well.

On the way to Keylong is the place Tandi, to be mentioned for two reasons. One is because we find that last filling station before Leh, which is 365 Km away. So any hard hitting bikes or fuel savvy vehicles, they have to be full from here on. The next thing I like about Tandi is its a junction for two big Indian rivers that merge to form Chenab.

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

After reaching Keylong, we stayed at one of the nice places with good view of the small village overall (or town ? , for me, its the next better places with all basic amenities after Leh). We had good time to roam around, get our bikes repaired (repaired for our own problems, coming up next).  Some of us got very good sleep only waking up for dinner. Some preferred to go back to Tandi and enjoy some fresh times.

In the night, finally, WE ALL MET. On the Day 4, the eleven of us meet ! Interesting plan and the implementation. We enjoyed it all though.

The staying place is good for another important reason that there are only 4 rooms on the first floor, and all occupied by us, literally giving us the full house, with the balcony and uninterrupted access to the kitchen.

We had a party time.

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

We all had good sleep, with everything settling in for the upcoming day. I know, and I have passed the information that Day 5 would have it all. Fun, snow, fantastic moments, long drives, curves…. the himalayas exposed. Dreaming.

Second Great Escape to the Himalayas – Day 3

‘The Sun Arrived’ but we were still sleeping. When is the last time we woke up at 5 AM ? :P Obviously its not going to happen. Nevertheless, we quickly packed up everything back on to the bikes and started by 8 AM from Manali. The hotel ownership gave us early morning coffee as well as enthusiasm to start it all.

The next one and half hours was awesome, picking up enjoyment and awesomeness. Pics have started flowing in, on cameras and cell phones. Waterfalls, lush green scenes changed the aura. After all, bike ride is not much of an effort, it seems.

We had to wait for an hour or so, 10 km away from the Rohtang Pass because of a road blockage due to heavy rains last night and landslides happening. Business picked up by the local people giving ‘sky rides’. Vineesh and Chandu tried after some bargaining and acceptance for backdoor entry out of the blockade!

On the other side, The scorpions have almost reached Manali, but had some nice views on their way as soon as they woke up. The missing Delhi – Manali route has been covered, better than anytime before, may be, by anyone else so far.

I was surprised to see this kind of beauty enroute Manali itself. The ongoing monsoon made the difference. Ofcourse, with some good photography as well.

So, here is the full scorpio gang in one of the pics below. Without order, the names are Roopa, Yuva, Tilak, Purnima, Vinay, Naresh and Vasu .

After some bit of rain and fight the police, again by the local people, the blockade is unofficially removed on the caution that ‘we are at our risk’. We also got lot of ‘discouragements’ the previous day that the route is ‘pathetic’ and our bikes cannot cross it in any case. With all that, there is a hint of doubt, but I’m challenging the roads, expecting to cross without much issue.

We soon found the ‘awesomeness’ awaiting us. It is definitely bitter than any of us thought. It took 45 min to cover around 2-3 km and then we are at almost a halt. Bikes will not go in that 5-inch mud. Gum boots are in action already. Vineesh and Mahesh got down helping to push from inside the mud while me and Chandu tried to full throttle, skidding and getting dirty. It was enjoyable, slowly, it gave way to other nasty things.

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

At a very slow pace, nevertheless, moving, we tried one inch at a time. The other vehicles are totally at a standstill for last night ! Our scorpio started from Manali on to this road already and there was no way to inform them to stop (no signal for cell), neither we wanted to inform them ! The target is to get to Keylong, all of us, and meet there by evening. The odds look bleak, very bleak.

Vineesh managed to get his bike out of the problem and is no where to be seen. We are doing our bit to move ahead with our bikes, and most unfortunately, Chandu’s bike broke down. It was the clutch plates. We know it cannot be repaired and can only replaced. We tried few options to see if the bike can move but with no luck. We started thinking all options. To leave the bike there ? To transport it on a truck ? To go back ? To sit there on the road ? Gods must be crazy.

There were few other bikes as well, trying their best to cross, we got another bunch of guys going a very similar schedule and plan, a Sameer from Dehradun. They helped us with carrying our luggage (only to carry it too far that it went along with them for the rest of the journey, Chandu is left with only a pair of clothes that he wore, for the next 10 days :P )

We are running out of time, and energy, without we knowing it. No signs of any idea. After some time, cells were working. Thank you God, I am an atheist.

Vineesh came walking to know what’s going on and soon realized its not easy. We started working out options. Vineesh is to go forward and find if he can get either a mechanic or some means to transport the truck. If he cannot find any, he will move to Keylong and stay there awaiting the rest of us. As no miracles are expected, he did the same and reached Keylong in his own style and by 8 PM he is in a hotel, trying to call us to know if there is any movement. He had some good pics taken (alone :P ), good job buddy.

We got in touch with the serviceman we got help for the bike last night and he accepted to come up from Manali and repair. Thanks to him. But it will take 4 hrs to reach. Well into the darkness, on the hill.

Mahesh and Chandu, with the help of people around and some army men, hardly managed to get that heavy bike moving in that mud. Hats off for the energy and patience. I followed them on my bike and waited.

Meanwhile, the scorpio also reached this place, and obviously stuck in that long jam. They had good pics, meanwhile, while we are pulling things hard.

Day 1 of theirs :) 8 + driver in scorpio with no food!!! to add more to the already worse situation, it started raining and it was suffocating inside!! ah … this experience is one of its kind :)

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

Waiting is a bad game. Though I thought I have lots of patience, soon I was made to realize that is not the case. Cold is shivering. Rain adds to the sarcastic fun. Everyone is desperate to get out of that place, or to eat whatever is sold or left with them in their pockets and bags. Its almost 9 PM. Three of the scorpios were having a leisure stroll. I am shackled, as I was trying to reach them to know if things are fine with them, and actually things looked to me, better than anytime. I am shackled and broke the rest of the shackles as well. A high voltage drama on that top of landslide prone dark cold hill, with repair going at a looming distance for the bike. It is not intended to be. I am the one who believes that the toughest times brings the character out. And I failed. May be I would do well in the next tough instance, learning from this (which I did, some days later). I learn, and I succeed. It was indeed tough, but the very thought of not being concerned thrust ed hard on me. A series of apologies followed. I am already sad of not the situation, nor that we are in it, but the episode of call-response-silence.

The bike got repaired, but its totally dark. The rest of the traffic is only going to move the next morning, so will be the scorpio. We sent Mahesh to sit in the scorpio. Me and Chandu, left alone. There is sort of a Golden rule, No Driving in the Dark.  We are going to disregard that, very soon.

I was a bit resistant internally to ride in the dark, but Chandu was insisting to get out and at least reach the next nearest place. After all, we cannot stay all night on the road. That’s impossible. I was of little less confident of driving in the dark as well. With that pessimistic stuff, we still decided to go. It took 2 hours after some high energy help from truck drivers to just cross to the other side of the road ! Heights.

But then it started to rain little, we can never stay there. I am also getting better with my mind, we started driving.

It was totally dark, our headlights are our life savers. The next three-four kilometers are the scariest. We turned curves and were hitting the road hard, pulled and finally somehow made it to Rohtang ! Not sure of the time, but is definitely past 12 in the midnight. Adventure to its total regard.

Reaching rohtang made small achievement. But we are sure there is no place to stay there. We have to go some 18 Km more to get a staying place. Its dead dark and, being on the top of the hill, it did scare us. We decided not to go further.

Chandu went to the shop keepers, who are dead sleep, to find if there is anything they can do to get us some shelter. We can carry our own shelter, but that ‘s not going to be sufficient in that cold, and with rain all around. First try failed miserably. I asked to try in the next few shops. Second failed too. Third shop person was very helpful. He allowed us to stay in his shop. We ran inside. The moment we are inside and kept the gloves off the hand, it Rained Horribly. Thank god again ? I don’t know. It rained for almost 1 hr I think, and there is no way we could have made it to the next 18 Km, had we started.

We tried sleeping on chairs inside the shop with rain thundering on us, but I couldn’t sleep. The shopkeeper (sad that We didn’t ask his name), said there is a separate tent that is empty and we can sleep there. I was having no second thoughts in accepting his offer. That tent is far in the hills, and we are scared, asked the shopkeeper to escort us :P . He helped unhesitatingly. Humanism still exists, purely and silently in the himalayas. I always knew it.

We ran to the tent in that downpour, adjusted hastily and finally had a chance to sleep. Didn’t expect that I would get a blanket to cover for that night. I almost made up my mind to sit on the road, except that I am sure it will disturb the next day’s schedule. Now all the worry is gone, next day is going to be a ‘break’ for all of us, as it will take a while for the scorpio also to reach Keylong once the traffic clears in the morning.

Vineesh is at least having good sleep (of all of us) in Keylong, me and Chandu in a tent shivering and sleeping (not much talk), and the rest in the scorpio, praying for no land slides (a land slide did happen, and the Sameer’s group I mentioned above had a fatal blow to one of their friends !  I wish a speedy recovery).

Deenemma Jeevitham.

Second Great Escape to the Himalayas – Day 2

A fantastic sleep after a much fantastic 14 hr ride finished after two other of my friends came to join us. Vineesh and Mahesh, the other two bikers planned to come to Manali directly and take bikes on rent for the rest of the trip. After some fun as soon as they came, with some flashbacks, sattires and other expectations about the coming days, we wanted to quickly get out to the market to find bikes and other needed stuff.

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

With rain hitting us little badly on Day – 1 , we decided to buy Rain Coats as well(which are on the checklist but somehow missed to be a part of the items in the first place).  The other interesting buy that we made, thanks to some window shopping by Chandu and Vineesh, is Gum Boots. Something that is also missing in my previous trip, and which proved to be of utmost use in the coming days !

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

Reminding of interesting buys, the other finding this time (actually on the Day – 1 itself ) is RedBull, a full 350 ML before heading to the bike. We had at lunch time at Bilaspur on Day 1 which proved very energetic for the next 6 hrs. With the same expectation, we had RedBull soon after we hit Manali town roads.

The bike rent business took more time than expected, with rain playing the spoil sport all through the day, following us wherever we went. Lots of traffic, lots of young couples all around the city, some of them ‘glaring at us’, may be they are glaring at our bikes and the bikes registration (AP 13k .. number plates). One beautiful woman from Gujarat (after you know, information gathering :P ) enquired about our plans, where we can came from and all, we too said : ‘ya we are coming from Andhra on bikes! ‘ .

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

Soon we realized the full day is going to be eaten up for this very task of renting bikes. By late evening , we decided (due to price considerations and also the bad supply of rented bikes in Manali) to go with a single bike, so its three bikes for four people. We got a Black Pulsar for which initial servicing had to be done which went till 3 AM !

The parallel story is that, the rest of the seven people who are going to be with us from Day 3, have all been gathering at Delhi International Airport coming mostly from Bangalore, and started to Manali by 10 PM after some waiting and some shopping @ Delhi Haat and other places, on a black Scorpio booked for rent some days ago. So here is a 12 hr trip where they are to reach Manali by around 12 AM on Day 3 to the same hotel where we stayed , though we have other plans to not to meet there at the hotel, to start Early ! The last person to be mentioned here is our scorpio driver, Mahinder Singh, a character of his own. Thanks to him, 95 % of our journey is beautiful. We will talk on this more and more.

Leh Trip, July 2011

Leh Trip, July 2011

We had late lunch, good dinner, tried our rain coats, got our Gum boots, made ready our bikes, roamed a thousand times back and forth on Manali roads, almost every traffic police personnel and all bike service and tools shop would know us now.

I had a nice sleep, though the rest three of us had to be awake till 3 AM, nevertheless, we wanted to start as soon as the ‘Sun Arrives’, and Vineesh took that responsibility.

Second Great Escape to the Himalayas – Day 1

Not even two years have passed since my first great escape to the Himalayas that I have planned and completed my second one ! Fascinating isn’t it ? It is, to me. This time, I have made sure the fun is between me and just another colleague but shared with as many as eleven guys. The fun is still fresh and the very idea of the great escape still tickles me ! Definitely ready for a third time, already …. to make it the greatest of the great escapes with many improvements and advancements covering new circuits in not-so-traveled months of the year.

This time its the early hours of the 7th of July that I started from my room (not sleeping the whole night packing , planning and coordinating the trip) to reach India Gate at 4 AM where I am to meet Chandu (Chadra Sekhar), my mate for the next two weeks on road.

After few start up pics at the India Gate in the dark, we sparked our journey, me on my trusted, time tested and tried Red Apache and Chandu on his Yellow Karizma at 445 AM aiming to reach Manali before it again gets dark. So it all started ….

Going slow till we get out of Delhi making sure the route is correct and filling the tank on the way, as it got brighter with Sun on the horizon, we picked up pace and reached Panipat within no time. Hitting 120/90 (Chandu/Nikhil) BP numbers on the fantastically laid NH1, we roared.

We had bunch of chocolates and fruits (and fruit juices), which are not much naturally associated with motor-bikers, to enjoy on our small breaks every hour. After around two hours of speeding, we had to slow down due to rain, though we continued without taking a break, partly enjoying the rain but partly getting soaked (the luggage also getting their share of un-preparation). Nevertheless we reached Ambala within 3.5 hrs and continued to Chandigarh/Mohali after which we took a commercial break.

Both of us have music all through, making the ride more enjoyable, though I lost my Sony wireless music box on my way :( . No issues. I’m prepared for bigger challenges.

Looking at the pace with which we were covering the distances, a quick thought that why can’t we go through Shima and cover the Spiti Circuit ? Of course that’s too much to ask and our afternoon session disproved our over ambitions.

We stopped next about 70Km after Chandigarh and just before getting on to the Ghat Roads of Himachal, where Chandu filled his tank second time and I waited for the rain to stop.

Through the drizzle and the more-than-expected green hills we reached Bilaspur by around 145PM where we stopped for our ‘lunch’ in a pastry shop. The sad thing is , we never opened our Cell phones to take any of the pics, our solo motto is to reach Manali by the end of light , and hence on a mission mode.

Its still a long way to go and we wanted to speed up our pace that got slowed down once we hit the mountain roads. Our next stop after 90 min is to be in Mandi, but somehow it seemed ‘far’. Even after a very solid non-stop travel we still were 25 Km away from Mandi. Disappointed by the still slow pace, we continued to improve on our speed. The next 90 proved better and by 530 we are in Kullu. We stopped for a Chai, and then through the by-pass, we are on our way to Manali. The route from Kullu is not so good as I expected it to be, and finally we made it to Manali at around 645 PM and halted at a filling station. Time to Fill :)

After filling Full Tank, we reached to the already booked Hotel, deep inside of Manali where we were just dead for the next 10 hrs for all practical purposes.

We are still two, nine more to join !

Day Summary : Delhi to Manali , ~ 600 Km in 14 Hrs
